What is a care partner?

Fortunately, not all people with Parkinson’s disease or dementia require caregiver assistance. Those who do require support rely on a spouse, friend, or professional. Whether assisting a loved one or client, a partnership forms based on trust with an emphasis on safety. That’s why I AM Movement prefers the term “care partner” because sometimes a person’s well-being is a team effort.

Parkinson’s and/or Dementia Care Partner Support Group

I AM Movement recognizes that a care partner’s job is demanding and exhausting. It’s hard to witness a loved one struggle with PD challenges while adapting to your new gatekeeper role. Patience and preserving dignity are a must. Inevitably, relationship dynamics change which is emotionally draining. That’s why it’s essential for care partners to carve out time for themselves so they can rejuvenate to avoid burnout.

I AM Movement can help. On the second Tuesday of every month at 2:15pm, Phyllis O’Brien leads a free support group for Parkinson’s disease and/or dementia care partners. Phyllis is a dedicated spouse who cares for her husband with Parkinson’s. Her goal is to provide a safe place to vent, share coping skills, promote medical advocacy, and create bonds with others who are experiencing the same life challenges. Members will have the opportunity to interact with others who understand the physical and emotional demands of being a care partner.
